Dermal Fïllers

Dermal Fillers, or Hyaluronic Acid Fillers, are a popular injection that can treat multiple areas and reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid, which we already produce in the body, helps to boost collagen production, restore elasticity in the skin and results in a more youthful complexion. In addition to treating signs of aging, hyaluronic acid is used as a lip filler.

This procedure is around 20-40 minutes long.

Results are temporary, and can last anywhere from 6-18 months.

How Dermal Fillers Work

Young skin is smooth and elastic because it contains a lot of hyaluronic acid. As we age, the amount of hyaluronic acid in the skin gradually diminishes. As a result, the skin becomes dryer, thinner and more wrinkled. We use fillers that are a long-lasting – but not permanent- synthetic form of hyaluronic acid. When fillers are injected under the surface of the skin, the gel mimics the naturally occurring substance by adding volume to the skin and smoothes out lines on the face.

Different products are used for specific areas of the face. For instance, the product which will best be used to fill vertical lip lines where lipstick can “run” is different from the one that is used to flatten the folds which occur by the side of the nose and mouth. Other products are most appropriate for filling out the cheekbones or improving the contours of the lips.

The choice for which product to use is based on individual treatment area needs, patient preference and injector’s plan of care, to find out what treatment options are available to you, book a consultation with us.

Treatable Areas

Lips: gives the lips a fuller and more symmetrical appearance.

Lip Lines: sometimes called Smoker’s Lines, fillers can help plump up the lips by replenishing lost volume.

Marionette or Smile Lines: reduces the appearance of wrinkles on either side of the mouth.

Cheeks: redefines the cheekbones and rejuvenates skin that has sagged over the years.

Tear troughs: improves the appearance of under eye bags and dark circles.

Nasolabial Folds: minimizes the wrinkles that start to appear on either side of the nose.

Temples: replenishes lost volume, which can create wrinkles and a “hollowed” look.

Hands: adds volume to the top of the hands, which can help reduce the appearance of prominent veins.

Earlobes: improves loss of volume due to wearing heavy earrings.

Other procedures using dermal fillers include:

Face Contouring: focuses on adding volume to the cheeks, chin and jawline to redefine facial features.

Soft Lift: gives the entire face a more youthful yet natural appearance by minimizing fine lines and replenishing volume and elasticity lost over the years.

Liquid Rhinoplasty: a minimally-invasive procedure that alters the shape of the nose.

Possible Side Effects

Everyone responds differently to filler injections. Factors such as bleeding tendency, area being treated, injection technique and injector expertise can influence outcomes. It is crucial that you choose an expert injector to provide you with the best possible results and the least risk of complication.

Some common, short-term side effects can include:

  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Mild discomfort and tenderness

These side effects typically go away after a few days. We recommend getting dermal fillers at least 2 weeks prior to an important event (including flying), since bruising and swelling is more likely to occur after the procedure.

In rare circumstances, a blood vessel may have inadvertently been injected which could cause damage to the tissue or even tissue breakdown if left untreated. We are able to address this extremely rare complication should it occur.
